Overview

The Oracle database is one of the most favorite database management systems for organizations of all sizes. While these companies face budgets restrictions, they still need to ensure the availability of their systems and the integrity of their data. It is critical that these systems will be available to customers at all times and also conforming organization and regulation uptime restraints.

Legacy methods such as database exports or proprietary backup formats are not sufficient to provide high availability and disaster recovery (DR) to ensure continued availability in the event of a “disaster”, or complete failure of the production site.

Challenges

Remote replication of the database for DR purposes is only delivered with Data Guard, which requires the use of Oracle Enterprise Edition licensing. No out-of-the-box DR solution for the Oracle Standard Edition with affordable pricing.

Aside the additional cost the Oracle Enterprise Edition pricing is high and with per-CPU-cores licensing scheme that can create heavy budget load when your organization needs to scale. Comparing to Standard Edition licensing, costs can increase in multiples and may reach orders of magnitude of the original Standard Edition licensing spends.

To reduce the significantly added cost of the Enterprise Edition solution, organizations look for alternatives that will allow them to remain with Oracle Standard Edition. The options are third party tools or in-house solutions.

In-house solutions are risky, costly to maintain, often unproven and difficult to support.

Third party tools however can provide a cost-effective, reliable, supported and proven solution to DR.

However, most of these solutions work with physical database servers only. It will be difficult to locate tools supporting Oracle based DR over hybrid infrastructure, private or public managed systems, PaaS or Database-as-a-service.

Solution

To support high availability and disaster recovery for hybrid platforms, physical or in the cloud, Oracle’s Standard Edition users may examine in-house solutions or third-party tools as no out-of-the-box solution is available from Oracle under this licensing.

Accelario Data Suite Backup & DR will help to keep a constant backup copy on-premises or in the cloud for fast disaster recovery, while supporting organization’s uptime, data availability and budget, all under the Oracle Standard Edition licensing.

Unlike legacy methods such as database exports or proprietary backup formats, the backup copy is a live, identical database that is synchronized incrementally at all time.

Our backup windows are near real-time and extremely fast. The DR copy is actually a live database, therefore allows quick recovery and switchover in just minutes.

We support on-premises physical servers, virtual machines, public cloud and managed platforms such as AWS RDS and Oracle Cloud ADW/ATP, protecting and enabling instant organization recovery.
